A BLUE OVERLAY ‘LONGEVITY’ WHITE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 1790-1850 China probably imperial glassworks, Beijing. Of slender ovoid form, supported on a circular foot and rising to a cylindrical neck with flat lip, the exterior is overlaid in sapphire-blue and meticulously carved to depict a continuous scene with a deer and a crane holding a lingzhi fungus in its beak, a bat and lingzhi flying above, and flanked by pine growing from rockwork, all backed by an even white ground. Stopper: Hardstone Dimensions: Height including stopper 78 mm. Diameter neck 13 mm and mouth 7 mm. The present snuff bottle is decorated with multiple symbols of longevity, including the deer, crane, and lingzhi, which together with the bat convey auspicious wishes for long life and happiness for the bride and groom.
