A YELLOW AND BLACK OVERLAY ‘TELESCOPE EYE GOLDFISH’ MILKY-WHITE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, CIRCA 1830-1930 China. Of rounded rectangular form, supported on an oval foot and rising to a waisted neck with everted rim and flat lip, finely carved through the black-splashed yellowish-tan layer to the milky-white ground to depict six telescope eye goldfish amid aquatic plants. The foot is encircled by a border of finely incised waves. Stopper: Agate on black platelet Dimensions: Height including stopper 69 mm. Diameter neck 15 mm and mouth 6 mm. Goldfish are an auspicious symbol in China, evoking the phrase ‘niannian you yu’ (abundane year after year).
