A RARE FIVE-COLOR OVERLAY WHITE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, YANGZHOU SCHOOL, 1820-1890 China. Of elongated oval form rising from a green lined oval foot to a cylindrical neck with flat lip, finely carved through the ruby-red, sapphire-blue, emerald-green, lemon-yellow, and pink layer to the white ground with three ladies accompanied by a child and bird to one side, and another lady holding a fan in a celestial garden with a floating pavilion, pines emerging from scrolling clouds, rockwork, and mandaring ducks. Stopper: Turquoise on a brass mount with glass finial Dimensions: Height including stopper 77 mm. Diameter neck 13 mm and mouth 7 mm. Bottles of this type are attributed to the Yangzhou School and are distinguished by their finely executed glass overlay decoration. Pieces usually feature intricate scenes and seal marks carved through a thin layer of colored glass to reveal a solid white ground beneath, demonstrating the technical precision and refined aesthetic associated with this group of 18th- and 19th-century Chinese overlay glasswork.
