A FOUR-COLOR OVERLAY GLASS 'SANDUO' SNUFF BOTTLE, 18TH-19TH CENTURY China. Of ovoid form, tapering towards the oval foot and set with a gently waisted neck with flat lip, carved through the pale green, ruby red, sapphire blue, and yellow overlay to the bubble suffused ground, featuring a leafy branch bearing a pomegranate and peach to one side, and a finger citron the reverse, three bats flying among the auspicious fruits, all above rockwork enclosing the foot. Stopper: Tourmaline with green glass finial and black platelet Dimensions: Height including stopper 69 mm. Diameter neck 14 mm and mouth 7 mm. The present design, featuring sprays of fruiting finger citron, peach, and pomegranate, represents a variation of the auspicious sanduo ('three abundances') motif. These fruits are symbols of endless long life, an abundance of offspring, and plentiful blessings. The pomegranate, bursting with seeds, symbolizes the wish for plentiful offspring; and the finger citron, often referred to as 'the Buddha's hand,' serves as an emblem of longevity, happiness, and good fortune.
