A FOUR-COLOR OVERLAY ‘LOTUS AND BUTTERFLIES’ MILKY GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 19TH CENTURY China. Of ovoid form rising from an oval foot to a short cylindrical neck with flat mouth, carved through the pale green, red, yellow and sapphire-blue ground to the milky ground to depict two lotus branches issuing from rockwork and bearing blossoms, accompanied by a pair of butterflies. The rockwork encircling the foot. Stopper: Pink glass Dimensions: Height including stopper 45 mm. Diameter neck 19 mm and mouth 6 mm. The subject matter of this bottle embodies the qualities of a perfect gentleman (junzi), reflecting the intrinsic attributes of the lotus, including purity, beauty, and fragrance.
