A RARE STONE FIGURE OF A FLYING DEVA, MON DVARAVATI PERIOD, 8TH-9TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve Thailand. Finely modeled with the left leg raised, dressed in a loin cloth, with a beaded necklace around the neck, and anklet, the face with a serene expression, downcast eyes above wide lips forming a subtle smile, framed by curled hair behind a floral diadem and elongated earlobes. Celestial figures shown in flight (Thai: thewada ho, "flying devas") form part of the architectural vocabulary of Dvaravati Buddhist art in central Thailand. Executed in stucco or terracotta and originally attached to religious monuments, these figures appear in association with sacred architecture at important Dvaravati sites including U Thong, Nakhon Pathom, and Khu Bua. Their iconography ultimately derives from Indian Buddhist conceptions of heavenly beings attending and venerating the Buddha, but was adapted within the distinctive artistic traditions of Mon Dvaravati culture.
