拍品描述

A PAIR OF RARE BRONZE ‘BUFFALO HEAD’ RITUAL BELLS, DONG SON CULTURE This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 222, FH 1986, Dong Son pair of bells, bronze, 5th c. AD” Gallery price: EUR 1,850 or approx. EUR 3,100 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Circa 400 BC-100 AD. Each boldly cast, with a long slit along the bottom and a large suspension tube at the top, centered by a highly abstracted buffalo head, issuing a sinuous rope-halter encircling the globular bell with the surface entirely covered in neatly incised spiral lines characteristic of the Dong Son culture artistry. Important Note: For essential information on the Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger and provenance documentation please visit here: www.zacke.at/rubencollection_ledger Dimensions: Length 10.3 cm (each) Dong Son (named for a village in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam) was a Bronze Age culture in ancient Vietnam centered at the Red River Valley of northern Vietnam from 1000 BC until the first century AD. Vietnamese historians attribute it to the states of Văn Lang and Âu Lạc. Its influence spread to other parts of Southeast Asia, including Maritime Southeast Asia, throughout the first millennium BC. The culture long remained a mystery to western archaeologists, and it was known only through its bronze objects, many of which were taken from burial sites. Dong Son bronze objects were exhibited in Europe for a century before their original location was even determined, and several theories and speculations over the dating methodologies of the culture continue to this day. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze ritual bell, Dong Son culture, c. 400 BC-100 AD, 4.4 cm long, in the Hartenberger World Music Collection of Historical Instruments, accession number 2AS-IDST-07-16. Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie’s London, 30 January 2019, lot 149 Price: GBP 5,250 or approx. EUR 8,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Expert remark: Compare the closely related subject, manner of casting, and modeling, particularly the similarly stylized features of the buffalo head. Note the similar size (11.5 cm) and that the lot comprises four bells.
