A SMALL BRONZE FIGURE OF GANESHA, BAYON STYLE, 12TH-13TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2012: “No. 702, Small Ganesha sitting Khmer Bayon 13th c. bronze, H. 7.5 cm, FH 1985” Gallery price: EUR 2,700 or approx. EUR 3,800 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Khmer Empire, Angkor period. Boldly cast, depicted seated in royal ease, resting his left hand upon the corresponding leg, while the raised right hand holds a small fragment of a tusk. The figure clad in a short sampot and richly adorned with jewelry. The well-defined elephant head characterized by a long, gently curving trunk and outstretched ears, surmounted by a tiered conical chignon secured with a tiara. Since the spirit of the deity was believed to reside within the image, this small bronze statue would therefore constitute an ideal travelling companion, guiding the bearer toward prudent decisions and safe passage. Ganesha was introduced to Southeast Asian artists in the 7th century. Over the following centuries, the chubby elephant icon from India was transformed into a more streamlined anthropomorphic figure, often depicted in a meditative posture, seated in lotus position, and often holding a broken tusk.
