拍品描述
A FOUR-COLOR OVERLAY ‘GRASSHOPPER AND FRUITS’ GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 19TH CENTURY China. Of compressed globular form with gently waisted neck and flat lip, overlaid in vibrant turquoise, lemon-yellow, white, and ruby red, each side depicting a bowl filled with leafy finger-citron, one side with a peach, the other side with a turnip and a katydid perched on one leaf, and a chilong clambering up the narrow side, its long twisted tail forming the foot ring. Stopper: Coral on a hardstone platelet Dimensions: Height including stopper 62 mm. Diameter neck 17 mm and mouth 8 mm. The subject on the present snuff bottle is likely linked to the ‘basket and fruit’ design associated with the eighteenth-century Qing Court. The popularity of baskets in general at the Court may arise from the probable symbolism of the basket (lanzi) which may suggest male children (nanzi) and one of the three desires dear to the Chinese heart which are embodied in the term sanduo ('three plenties').
