A PRISTINE GREEN-OVERLAY ‘CRICKET AND GRAPES’ SNOWFLAKE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 1780-1850 China. Of compressed ovoid form, supported on an oval foot and rising to a tubular neck, crisply carved through the emerald-green overlay to the translucent, 'snowstorm' ground, with a continuous grapevine laden with heavy clusters of grapes and a cricket. Stopper: Coral stopper with pearl finial, carved spoon Dimensions: Height including stopper 88 mm. Diameter neck 14 mm and mouth 7 mm. The present bottle is decorated with crickets, traditionally prized for their songs and fighting ability, and cherished for their homophonic association with happiness (xi) and auspiciousness (xi). Grapes shown in abundant clusters, symbolize prosperity and fertility, while the curling tendrils of the vines recall the homophone for ‘ten thousand (wan)’ further amplifying their auspicious meaning. Together, the imagery of crickets and grapes evokes the autumn season and imbues the bottle with layered symbolic significance, combining seasonal resonance with wishes for fortune and abundance.
