A RARE TRIPLE-OVERLAY ‘CRABS’ MILKY-WHITE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 18TH-19TH CENTURY China. Of compressed ovoid form, rising from an oval foot to a gently waisted neck with flat lip, the opaque white ground covered in a translucent layer of turquoise-glass incised to resemble a tortoise’s carapace and overlaid with further layers of white, green, and red rendered as crabs. Stopper: Coral with bead finial on a black platelet Dimensions: Height including stopper 50 mm. Diameter neck 14 mm and mouth 7 mm. Triple overlay glass snuff bottles such as the current example are considerably rare. Clare Chu opined on the rarity of this group in ‘An Analysis of the Seal School Group of Glass Snuff Bottles’, JICSBS, Summer, 1993, pp. 5-14, no. 42 and 45, where she states that there are approximately twenty examples of this group of multiple layers bottles in the public realm.
