A RARE AND INSCRIBED TURQUOISE-GREEN OVERLAY ‘NIGHT-SHINING WHITE’ SNOWFLAKE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY China. Of flattened globular form, raised on an oval foot and tapering towards the cylindrical neck with flat lip. The bubble suffused ground with white inclusions, overlaid in transparent turquoise-green glass to depict a horse with its halter tied to a pole and flanked by two seal marks, and the reverse featuring three oxen, their fur delicately incised. Inscriptions: To the upper left, seal mark ‘Zhao ye bai tu (night-shining white)’, to the upper right seal mark ‘Wen wan (collectible)’ Stopper: Tourmaline with jadeite finial and black platelet Dimensions: Height including stopper 70 mm. Diameter neck 15 mm and mouth 7 mm. The present bottle features the famous painting ‘Night-shining white’ by the artist Han Gan, a leading horse painter of the Tang dynasty. Han Gan was known for capturing not only the likeness of a horse but also its spirit. The original painting, attributed to the artist, is a portrait of a charger of Emperor Xuanzong. The three oxen depicted on the reverse are likely a reference to the painting ‘five oxen’ by Han Huang, a prime minister and artist in the Tang dynasty. Oxen are a celebrated subject in China, symbolizing hard work, endurance and humble virtue. Combined with the tethered horse, which forms a common rebus that expresses a wish for speedy promotion of young candidates, the snuff bottle was possibly commissioned as a present for someone taking the civil service exam.
