拍品描述
A RARE BLACK AND WHITE DOUBLE-OVERLAY TURQUOISE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 1780-1840 China. Of compressed globular form, supported on an oval foot and rising to a gently waisted neck with flat lip, the turquoise body adorned with layered overlays of white and black, continuously carved with two medallions, one enclosing two figures centered by a short table supporting a flower arrangement, two figures hidden in the background below the pine and bamboo, and a second medallion featuring a farmer riding an ox, another farmer with a cormorant, a bat above, and another two hidden figures flying above. The narrow sides are decorated with three blossoms over a cloud-like network, and with a lappet band enclosing the neck. The oval foot is formed by the black overlay. Stopper: Ruby in a bronze mount Dimensions: Height including stopper 71 mm. Diameter neck 17 mm and mouth 6 mm. Expert’s note: This rare bottle belongs to the group of double-overlay examples made in the mid-Qing dynasty. Finely carved through the black and white overlays to the unusual turquoise-blue ground, the color combination is extremely rare. Glass snuff bottles such as the present lot required considerable skill and precision, and resulted in vivid three dimensionality. Moss, Graham and Tsang, in A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol.5, Glass, Hong Kong, 1995, p. 677-678 argue that this group of bottles, characterized by plantain-leaf borders round the neck, are clearly the work of the same production team. The fact that another closely related double-overlay bottle from the Barron Collection is inscribed 'a gift from the Inner (Palace) of the Qianlong Emperor' suggests that this entire group possibly dates from the late Qianlong period.
