A RARE SMALL KHMER BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA MUCHALINDA, ANGKOR WAT STYLE, 12TH-13TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 315, OK 1994, Khmer Angkor Wat 12th c. bronze Buddha Muchalinda” Gallery price: EUR 1,200 or approx. EUR 2,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Finely cast, seated in ardha padmasana on the scaled coils of Muchalinda, his hands lowered in dhyana mudra, dressed in a modest sampot secured at the waist with a knotted tie, the face with almond-shaped eyes in a benevolent expression, an aquiline nose, wide lips curled into a smile, all flanked by earlobes suspending pendeloque earrings; the hair pulled into a conical chignon and secured with a wide tiara. Iconographically, this image refers to a moment in the life of the Buddha when the serpent deity Muchalinda sheltered him during a period of meditation interrupted by a great storm. This iconography became popular during the reign of the Khmer king Jayavarman VII (r.ca. 1181-1218), who may have identified himself with the Buddha in this form. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related copper-alloy figure of Buddha Muchalinda, dated to the 13th century, 13 cm high, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number IS.137-1999.
