A PRISTINE CINNABAR OVERLAY ‘GEESE IN LOTUS POND’ TURQUOISE GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 1780-1850 China. Of compressed globular form, rising from an oval foot to a cylindrical neck with flat lip, the opaque turquoise ground carved in relief and overlaid in cinnabar-red to depict two geese swimming in a lotus pond, surrounded by water reed and lotus stems. Stopper: Green glass in imitation of jadeite on a black platelet Dimensions: Height including stopper 60 mm. Diameter neck 12 mm and mouth 6 mm. The combination of red overlay decoration and turquoise glass became particularly fashionable in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The luminous turquoise-blue ground evokes a summer sky, providing an ideal backdrop for the depiction of landscape and outdoor scenes.
