A RARE AND UNUSUAL ROCK CRYSTAL ‘DOUBLE’ SNUFF BOTTLE, 1750-1870 China. Well hollowed, the body of pear shape, rising from a flat oval foot to a cylindrical neck with flat lip, and joined to one side with a smaller pear-form snuff bottle that is also hollowed. The translucent stone with microscopic inclusions. Stopper: Onyx cabochon in gilt-metal mount (larger), green jadeite in gilt-metal mount (smaller) Dimensions: Height including stopper 66 mm. Diameter neck 12 mm and mouth 6 mm. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related quartz double snuff bottle, dated 1780-1880, 6.2 cm tall, illustrated in Robert Hall, Chinese Snuff Bottles II: Including an important selection from the Marian Mayer Collection, London, 1989, p.57, no. 39.
