A PALE GREY AND CHESTNUT NEPHRITE ‘CHILONG’ SNUFF BOTTLE, 18TH CENTURY China. Well hollowed, the flattened pale grey bottle of rounded-rectangular form, raised on a short oval foot ring and rising to a tall cylindrical neck with a flat rim, carved in relief through an upper layer of pale chestnut skin with confronting archaistic dragons, their tails morphing into chilong heads and their sinuous bodies forming the character ‘long’ (dragon). Stopper: Coral on gilt-metal collar; with metal spoon Dimensions: Height including stopper 82 mm. Diameter neck 22 mm and mouth 7 mm. Literature comparison: Compare a related dark russet and celadon jade ‘dragon’ snuff bottle, produced for the Imperial Court and dated 1740-1820, sold at Sotheby's London, 3 December 1997, lot 532, and now in the Crane Collection and illustrated on their website. Compare a related russet and yellow-green jade snuff bottle a pair of dragons and an attendant with a boat, dated 1725-1800, 6.5 cm tall, illustrated in John Gilmore Ford, Chinese Snuff Bottles: the Edward Choate O'Dell Collection, Baltimore, 1982, p. 28 and 75, no. 9.
