AN EGYPTIAN LIMESTONE ‘DUAMUTEF’ DUMMY CANOPIC JAR, THIRD INTERMEDIATE PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2012: “No. 697, Small canope (fake) [i. e. dummy] in shape of Duamutef Egypt Late period white limestone, H.: 20.7 cm, OK 2005” Gallery price: EUR 8,900 or approx. EUR 12,500 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Egypt, circa 1069-332 BC. Carved out of a single piece of limestone, an incised line indicating the division between the jar and the lid, to depict the Son of Horus, Duamutef, the guardian of the stomach, shown with pointed ears and pronounced slender snout, neatly incised with narrowed eyes with outlines and an incised mouth. The best known versions of these jars have lids in the shape of the heads of protective deities called the four Sons of Horus. The human-headed Imseti was the guardian of the liver; the baboon-headed Hapy looked after the lungs; the jackal-headed Duamutef was responsible for the stomach; and the falcon-headed Qebehsenuef cared for the intestines. This dummy jar has no interior cavity and the "lid" is not removable. It dates to a period during which the internal organs were mummified and then placed back into the mummy, but canopic jars continued to be included as part of the burial equipment in order to ensure the protection of the four Sons of Horus. Among the jackal-headed deities of ancient Egypt, Duamutef occupies a place of particular importance. One of the Four Sons of Horus, he served as a guardian of the deceased, specifically entrusted with the protection of the stomach, and was himself under the protection of the goddess Neith. His distinctive jackal head, often associated at first glance with Anubis, appears most famously on canopic jars, making Duamutef one of the most recognizable yet less frequently named figures in Egyptian funerary art.
