AN IMPERIAL AGATE SNUFF BOTTLE, 1770-1830 Expert’s note: The Palace Workshops reserved exceptionally pure and evenly colored agates for imperial production. Material of this clarity and consistency was carefully selected to meet the exacting aesthetic standards of the Qing court, making bottles carved from such flawless chalcedony or agate among the most prized examples of the genre. China, probably Palace Workshops, Qing dynasty, late 18th / early 19th century. Of well-hollowed baluster form, supported on a short circular foot ring, and rising to a waisted neck with a flat lip, the translucent stone of a fine honey-beige tone and suffused with natural cloud-like markings. Stopper: Coral on a black vinyl collar Dimensions: Height including stopper 58 mm. Diameter neck 18 mm and mouth 8 mm. Auction Result Comparison Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, Snuff Bottles from the Mary and George Bloch Collection: Part VI, 26 May 2013, lot 194. Price: HKD 75,000 or approximately EUR 10,200 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Expert remark: A closely related chalcedony snuff bottle, attributed to the Palace Workshops and dating to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, demonstrating a comparable level of craftsmanship and material quality.
