A LARGE YELLOWISH-GREEN AND RUSSET JADE ‘WEIQI GAME’ SNUFF BOTTLE, MASTER OF THE ROCKS SCHOOL, 1740-1850 China. Well hollowed, the large bottle of square form with sloping shoulders, raised on a wide oval foot and rising to a cylindrical neck with slightly concave lip, one side carved in partial cameo giving depth to the two-toned skin. The front featuring two players immersed in a game of weiqi below a pine flanked by rockwork with stippled edges. The semi-opaque stone of an even yellowish green color with russet and beige skin interspersed with faint brown veins to one side. Stopper: Amethyst on a black platelet Dimensions: Height including stopper 84 mm. Diameter neck 30 mm and mouth 7 mm. The Master of the Rocks School seems to have specialized in carvings from two-colored hardstones, such as agate, crystal, chalcedony and jade. The school's main output were bottles carved with landscape designs, but many other subjects are recorded, which may have been partly produced for the Imperial Court. The present lot demonstrates an impressive use and balance of the relief decoration in the russet material contrasted with the yellow ground. The quality of carving and the use of material in the present bottle are typical of this school.
