A BLACK AND WHITE JADE ‘SCHOLAR’ SNUFF BOTTLE, SUZHOU SCHOOL, 18TH CENTURY Expert's Note: The two old labels, dating from around 2000, preserve the opinion of Alan Hartman, widely regarded as one of the foremost jade experts of the 20th century. Hartman attributed the bottle to the 18th century. At the time, the bottle was offered at US$12,000, which corresponds to approximately €25,000 in today's value when adjusted for inflation and converted into euros. These labels therefore not only document the bottle's attribution by a leading authority but also provide valuable evidence of its historical market appreciation. China. Well hollowed, of ovoid form rising from an oval, concaved foot to a cylindrical neck with flat lip, deeply carved as an immortal standing beside a farmer that appreciates a blossom, flanked by a horse, dog, and pine. The scene continuous to the reverse where an attendant kneels on rockwork atop water, holding a small bucket, framed by further rocks, pines, and lingzhi. The rocks lined with serrated edges. The semi-translucent stone is of a mottled grayish black and white color with cloudy inclusions and dark minute specks. Stopper: Coral on a black platelet, carved spoon Dimensions: Height including stopper 73 mm. Diameter neck 19 mm and mouth 9 mm. With a padded storage box. (2) Images of scholars and immortals set against rocky grottos and craggy pines are common motifs in snuff bottles from both the Suzhou and Master of the Rocks schools. This piece, crafted from a blackish-gray nephrite originating in Xinjiang, reflects a material choice that was highly popular in the 18th century. Favored by the Qing court and particularly adored by the Qianlong Emperor, this distinctive type of nephrite is well represented amongst many important 18th-century jades housed in the Palace Museum.
