A SUPERB WHITE JADE SNUFF BOTTLE WITH ‘XINGYOUHENG TANG’ MARK, 1796-1861 China. Very well hollowed, of flattened globular form, rising from an oval foot to a cylindrical neck with flat lip. The semi-translucent stone is of an even white color with minor icy-white inclusions and a superb polish. The recessed base is incised with the four-character mark Xingyouheng Tang (‘Hall of Constancy’). Stopper: Tourmaline on a black platelet with jadeite finial Dimensions: Height including stopper 71 mm. Diameter neck 16 mm and mouth 5 mm. The Xingyouheng Tang mark on the base is associated with Prince Ding (Zaiquan, 1794–1854), a great-great-grandson of the Qianlong Emperor. Although the exact date when Prince Zaiquan began using this title on artworks is unknown, records indicate he employed it by 1848, when he published a collection of verses titled Xingyouheng Tang Chuji (First Collection from the Xingyouheng Tang). Zaiquan attended the Palace school for princes and studied under Tang Jingzhao beginning in 1808, and he inherited the title of Prince Ding in 1836, though the mark on these objects is unrelated to that elevation. The craftsmanship and stylistic characteristics of this bottle align with this period. Several snuff bottles in a variety of materials, as well as other collectors’ objects, have been incised with this mark. However, it should be noted that a number of later works also bear the Xingyouheng Tang inscription.
