A RUSSET AND WHITE JADE ‘EAGLES’ SNUFF BOTTLE, 1770-1850 China. Well hollowed, of flattened ovoid form, rising from a concave foot to a cylindrical neck with flat lip, one side carved through the russet layer to depict a prunus tree and butterfly flanked by an eagle on a rock and lingzhi. The other side featuring an eagle perched on a pine. The carver has finely incorporated the stone's natural dendritic markings to delineate the trunk and foliage of the prunus tree. The stone is of a white color with deep russet areas to one side and icy white inclusions. Stopper: Coral on a metal platelet, carved as a Chilong Dimensions: Height including stopper 72 mm. Diameter neck 19 mm and mouth 7 mm. The eagle (ying) is associated with bravery and moral strength, both for its naturally fierce character and for its homophonous link with the word for the word hero (yingxiong). Each bird rests alone below a tree, suggesting the pun ‘yingxiong duli’, meaning 'a hero standing alone'.
