A WHITE JADE AND RUSSET ‘EAGLE AND PINE’ SNUFF BOTTLE, 1750-1850 China. Well hollowed, of flattened globular form rising from an oval foot to a tubular neck with flat lip, the surface carved in relief to depict an eagle on rockwork highlighted in feathery russet inclusion, framed above by a gnarly pine branch and below by crashing waves. Serrated rockwork and further turbulent waves wrap around the foot, the reverse with a pair of large peaches issuing from a leafy branch beside lingzhi fungus. The semi-translucent stone is of an even white with cloudy white inclusions and faint russet skin. Stopper: Pink glass on black platelet Dimensions: Height including stopper 69 mm. Diameter neck 20 mm and mouth 7 mm. The combination of an eagle standing on one leg with below a pine tree imparts several symbolic meanings. An eagle (ying) perched on one leg (duli) is a rebus for the phrase yingxiong duli (a great man towers over his peers). The imagery evokes ideals of courage, loyalty and the ability to achieve great things. The combination of an eagle and a pine tree conveys a wish that such a great man will live a long life. Peaches and lingzhi fungi are potent symbols of longevity and immortality. Peaches are traditionally associated with the Peaches of Immortality from Daoist mythology, believed to confer long life upon those who consume them. Lingzhi fungi, similarly, symbolize health, spiritual power, and the attainment of immortality. When combined, these motifs convey auspicious blessings for enduring vitality, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.
