A WHITE JADE ‘GOURD’ SNUFF BOTTLE, 1750-1850 China. Very well hollowed and finely carved in the shape of an elongated gourd growing from leafage adorning the body in relief. The semi-translucent stone is of a pale greenish-white color with a faint russet patch. Stopper: Tourmaline (matching) Dimensions: Height including stopper 75 mm. Diameter mouth 6 mm. The gourd (hulu) is a powerful symbol of blessings, longevity, and protection, in Chinese art history. It is associated with prosperity and infinity, and its many seeds represent fertility and abundant descendants.
