AN EGYPTIAN POLYCHROME WOOD SARCOPHAGUS FRAGMENT DEPICTING NUT, LATE PERIOD-PTOLEMAIC PERIOD This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2012: “No. 597, Sacrophagus board with woman, Egypt Late Period painted wood, 74 x 39 cm, Prov. 1970 Vikt. Lindström Stockholm” Gallery price: EUR 4,500 or approx. EUR 6,400 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. The ledger establishes that this object was located in Europe before the UNESCO 1970 Convention entered into force. Egypt, 664-30 BC. From the inside of a sarcophagus, finely painted with Nut, the goddess of the sky and the heavenly bodies, facing right with her arms held by her sides, and wearing a long-beaded dress, beaded jewelry, broad collar, and tripartite wig with a fillet across her forehead, surmounted by a round water pot, the elegantly drawn face with a large eye, a long eyebrow and cosmetic lines. The right edge of the panel is inscribed with a column of hieroglyphs. As a divinity responsible for renewing the sun each day by swallowing the setting sun, Ra, each evening and giving birth to him by her womb in the morning, Nut was regarded as suitable imagery for the underside of the lid of sarcophagi, as this associated the deceased with re-enacting the journey of the Ra between heaven and earth.
