拍品描述

A SUPERB EGYPTIAN PAINTED WOOD FIGURE OF THE SEAL BEARER TJETJI, OLD KINGDOM, DYNASTY VI This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 70, AB 1981, Egypt. Striding high rank official 6th dynasty” Gallery price: EUR 132,000 or approx. EUR 221,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Egypt, 2321-2184 BC. Finely carved in several sections, Tjetji is shown in the classic pose of a standing official, with his left leg advanced in stride, a long staff in his left hand, and a sekhem scepter held horizontally in his right hand, the elongated torso with slender musculature, the eyebrows, eyelines and mouth in relief. Important Note: For essential information on the Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger and provenance documentation please visit here: www.zacke.at/rubencollection_ledger Dimensions: Height 45.3 cm Stone statues of men in this pose have back pillars, negative space between the limbs, and, as substitutes for the slender implements, rolled cloths, the button-like ends of which are barely visible within their fists. Since wooden statues were free of these conventions, they tend to look less rigid and more natural. For a short period during the late Old Kingdom and the 1st Intermediate Period, it was popular to show the tomb's owner without clothes. These figures represent the deceased in the phase of renewal in front of the god Osiris, lord of the underworld. Expert’s note: The arms of this statue were made separately and pegged to the body, and the feet tenoned into a separate base. The figure was once fully painted according to the usual conventions, with the body dark red, the hair and nipples black, and the finger- and toenails white. The staff and scepter were also separate pieces, inserted through the holes in Tjetji's hands. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related inlaid wood nude figure of Tjetji, Dynasty 6, dated 2321-2184 BC, 75 cm high, in the British Museum, registration number EA29594. Compare a closely related standing male figure, Late Old Kingdom-First Intermediate Period, 2236-2150 BC, 54 cm high, in the Walters Art Museum, accession number 22.211. Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie’s New York, 8 June 2007, lot 8 Price: USD 336,000 or approx. EUR 473,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Expert remark: Compare the closely related modeling and manner of carving with similar pose and expression. Note the size (80.6 cm) and garment.
