A GRANITE FIGURE OF BHUDEVI, LATE CHOLA-EARLY VIJAYANAGARA PERIOD, 13TH-14TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 166, HH 1986, India 13th c. granit Lady.” Gallery price: EUR 5,300 or approx. EUR 8,900 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. India, Tamil Nadu. Finely carved standing in a slight tribangha with the right knee bent, holding a lotus in her right hand and her left by her side. Adorned with multiple necklaces, the deity is dressed in a close-fitting dhoti carved with elegantly undulating folds and secured with beaded festoons. Her rounded face with wide almond-shaped eyes surmounted by a conical headdress. (2) This finely carved sculpture depicts Bhudevi, the Earth Goddess, one of the consorts of Vishnu. Legend has it that she was abducted by the demon Hiranyaksha, prompting Vishnu to take on the form of his boar avatar Varaha and plunge to the depths of the ocean to save her. Vishnu then proceeded to destroy the demon with his chakra after lifting her above the waves on his tusks. Bhudevi is frequently represented as part of a trinity, with Vishnu in the center and Sri Devi on the other side. Bhudevi is distinguishable from Sri Devi by her prominent breast band. The Chola period (9th-13th centuries) witnessed unparalleled cultural and artistic achievements and is widely considered to be a ‘Golden Age’ in south Indian history. At the height of their power the Chola monarchs controlled a vast territory that included the southern part of the Indian peninsula and extended to Sri Lanka and the Maldive Islands. They were active patrons of the arts and built numerous temples. Compare a closely related larger stone figure of Bhudevi, Vijayanagara, dated to the 15th century, 130 cm high, in the National Museum, New Delhi, accession number 59.153/86.
