A RARE GRANITE FIGURE OF CHANDIKESHVARA, CHOLA DYNASTY, 13TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve South India, Tamil Nadu. The saint is shown seated on a high festooned pedestal in lalitasana, his right hand holds an axe while the left is lowered above his knee. The body is sculpted with a broad and powerful chest in typical Pallava tradition. Simple ornaments adorn his body. His peaceful visage peers forward with downcast eyes beneath slender brows, a bar-shaped nose, a slightly grinning mouth, and cupped ears, and behind his head is a flowing coiffure that adds to his royal appearance. (2) Chandikeshvara, born as Vicharasarman, was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva when he was a boy. He used to make shiva lingas of sand and make offerings of cow's milk to them. Once, his father Yajnadatta, who was against this practice kicked one of the lingas in anger. Vicharasarman in a fit of rage chopped off his father's leg with an axe. Such was his devotion for his lord. This spur of the moment reaction pleased Shiva immensely. He appeared immediately and embraced him. He made him the head of the Ganas (dwarf devotees of Shiva) and renamed him Chandikeshvara. Chandikeshvaras can still be seen as part of the architecture at various ancient temples, most often placed at the exit. It is said that he keeps a tab on the visitors entering and leaving the temple.
