A LARGE BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA, ANGKOR WAT STYLE, 12TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2012: “No. 746, Standing Buddha Khmer, H. 35.5 cm, LA UK art market 1980.” Gallery price: EUR 34,000 or approx. EUR 48,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Khmer Empire. Standing in samapada on a tiered circular base, holding a lotus bud in each hand, wearing a short pleated sampot, tucked around the belt, the end forming a symmetrical 'fishtail' at the hem, the serene face with almond-shaped eyes, and full lips, the hair surmounted by a conical ushnisha behind a flaring tiara. Avalokiteshvara is the personification of compassion and the figure has a lively facial expression with alert eyes and a pleasant smile, bestowing benevolence on the devotee. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze figure of a male divinity, 26.9 cm high, Bayon style, dated Angkor period, late 12th to early 13th century, in the National Museum of Cambodia, inventory number Ga.2687.
