AN IMPORTANT SANDSTONE FIGURE OF UMA, ANGKOR PERIOD, BAPHUON STYLE, 11TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 328, LA 1978, Sunde, Khmer Baphuon Uma 11th c.” Gallery price: EUR 97,000 or approx. Sensitively carved, standing firmly in samabhanga, clad in a long sampot wrapped around her hips, with a fishtail-shaped flange rising above her narrow waist. The garment incised with parallel folds falling toward the front and secured with a tasseled foliate belt tied in a knot. Her torso is defined by prominent breasts, framed below by a pair of incised rib lines. Her visage bears a serene expression, marked by almond-shaped eyes beneath a continuous arched brow, a broad nose, and full lips forming a gentle smile, all flanked by long pendulous earlobes and surmounted by finely matted hair drawn upward, secured with a strand of pearls. (2) Sculpture from the Baphuon period, beginning in the first half of the eleventh century, represents a high point that was never again fully equaled in Khmer art. Divine figures of this era are rendered with notable anatomical precision and convey a serene, dignified presence. The gods are depicted as handsome, well-proportioned male figures of aristocratic Khmer type, while the goddesses appear as beautiful, sensuous, and graceful female forms. These sacred images are refined and naturalistic, presenting the deities in idealized human guise. The art of the Baphuon period introduced new elements and refinements drawing on the developments of the previous half-century. The wide, muscular torsos are replaced with rounded shoulders and a narrow waist, with curved hips emphasized by the hem of the sampot, which is pulled up over the hips in a U-shape. The folds of the sampot during the Baphuon fall in asymmetrical pleats, emphasizing the multiple layers of the garment, while the knots at the waist often tail off in scrolling embellishments. Compared to the more imposing works of the tenth century, Baphuon-period sculpture is generally more restrained in scale. Facial expressions are soft and often subtly alluring. The elaborate chignon covers and diadems that were common in much of the tenth century appear less frequently. Instead, the hair is typically arranged in a chignon secured by a simple jeweled or floral circlet.
