A LARGE BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, THAILAND, 19TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 119, FH 1984, Thai Royal Buddha, bronze, 19th c. Rama 5.” Gallery price: EUR 14,000 or approx. EUR 23,500 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Heavily cast seated in virasana on a simple stand, the right hand gracefully extended in bhumisparsa mudra, while the left rests in dhyana mudra upon the lap. The figure is clad in a diaphanous uttarasanga draped over the left shoulder, its hem falling softly across the torso. The finely modeled face conveys a serene expression, defined by heavy-lidded, downcast eyes beneath gently arched brows, a prominent nose, and full lips forming a subtle smile, all framed by long, pendulous earlobes. The hair is arranged in snail-shell curls over the ushnisha surmounted by a small flame finial. Having broken free from Khmer domination in the second quarter of the thirteenth century, the Sukhothai kingdom enjoyed a brief but artistically outstanding period of independence until its subordination to Ayutthaya in 1438. During the reign of Ramkhamhaeng (r. 1279-1299), the kingdom reached the height of its power, extending over much of present-day Thailand, with the exception of the northern and northeastern regions. After becoming an independent polity, Sukhothai gradually developed a distinctive artistic language, departing from earlier Khmer-derived traditions. It produced Buddha images of exceptional originality and refinement, regarded as a pinnacle of Thai artistic achievement. Typical features of this early sculptural tradition include the flame-like ushnisha, large stylized hair curls, elongated earlobes, and a continuous line formed by the eyebrows flowing into the bridge of the nose, whose tip gently turns downward. Also characteristic is the treatment of the robe, draped over the left shoulder of the Buddha, with its edge extending across the left forearm and left leg, all rendered with harmonious volumes and well-balanced proportions.
