A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, CHIENG SEN PERIOD, 16TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 276, FH 1985, Thai Chieng Sen Lan Na bronze Buddha 15th c.” Gallery price: EUR 3,850 or approx. Finely cast, the Buddha is seated in virasana on a neatly incised double lotus pedestal with beaded borders raised on a broad octagonal base, the hands resting above the lap, wearing monastic robes draped over his left shoulder, his calm face with half-lowered eyes, bow-shaped brows and full lips forming a silent smile. His hair arranged in tight curls over the ushnisha surmounted by a bud-shaped finial. This stylistic tradition combines elements of both the Sukhothai and Lan Na schools, two of the principal sculptural traditions of Thailand. The distinctive design of the pedestal, with a hexagonal base supporting a lotus throne of broad petals and a beaded upper rim, is characteristic of the Lan Na style. However, whereas classical Lan Na images depict the robe's hem draped high above the left pectoral, here a Sukhothai convention of terminating by the navel is followed.
