(2) The present sculpture is cast in the Northern Sukhothai style, also referred to as the Chieng Sen style, named after the notable northern Thai city situated on the banks of the Mekong River during the Lan Na kingdom. This stylistic tradition combines elements of both the Sukhothai and Lan Na schools, two of the principal sculptural traditions of Thailand. Depictions of the Buddha’s principal disciples occupy a significant place within the sculptural traditions of Thailand. While the historical Buddha is typically represented as the central focus of devotion, attendant figures of revered disciples served to emphasize the transmission of Buddhist doctrine and the ideal qualities embodied by the monastic community. Among the most frequently represented are Sariputra and Maudgalyayana (Pali: Sāriputta and Moggallāna), the Buddha’s two chief disciples. According to Buddhist tradition, both men were seekers of spiritual truth before encountering the Buddha’s teachings and eventually joining the monastic order. Sariputra was celebrated for his profound wisdom and mastery of doctrine, while Maudgalyayana was renowned for his extraordinary spiritual attainments and supernatural powers.
