A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA, AYUTTHAYA PERIOD, 15TH-16TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 132, FH 1990, Thai Ayutthaya fragmented Buddha 15th-16th c.” Gallery price: EUR 4,000 or approx. EUR 6,700 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Thailand. Cast as Buddha seated in virasana, the left hand rests gently on his lap whilst the elongated fingers of his right hand are outstretched in bhumisparsha mudra. Dressed in a monk's garb, with his feet, right shoulder and full arm exposed, wearing a long scarf that falls diagonally from the left shoulder above the navel. The oval face with a serene expression, downcast eyes, and the lips forming a subtle smile, framed by tight curls covering the head and ushnisha. (2) Expert’s note: This is a fine example of Ayutthaya period production that took inspiration from various Thai artistic traditions, in this case, particularly Sukhothai. Encompassing the lands of the former Mon, Khmer, and Sukhothai kingdoms, Ayutthaya is better understood as a patchwork of self-governing principalities rather than a unified state. Ethnic and political concerns are apparent in Buddha images produced for the Ayutthaya kingdom, a continuation of the syncretic art of the preceding U-Thong period (12th-15th century). U-Thong workshops experimented with the physiognomic representation and iconography of the Buddha, blending features associated with images produced by Mon, Khmer, and Thai artisans (see Hiram W.
