A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, NORTHERN SUKHOTHAI STYLE, 15TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 122, Thomas Jensen 1992, Thai Sukhothai / Kamphaeng Phet 15th c.” Gallery price: EUR 5,800 or approx. EUR 9,700 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Thailand. Seated in virasana on a raised pedestal, the right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra, the left held in dhyana mudra above his lap, dressed in diaphanous uttarasanga which covers the left shoulder and crosses the chest diagonally, but leaves the right shoulder and right arm bare. The serene face with heavy-lidded downcast eyes, arched brows, and full lips forming a benevolent smile, flanked by elongated earlobes, the hair arranged in small snail-shell curls over the gently domed ushnisha surmounted by a flame finial. Important Note: For essential information on the Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger and provenance documentation please visit here: www.zacke.at/rubencollection_ledger Dimensions: Height 23.7 cm Ceasing to represent the Buddha in a Khmer manner, the emergent Thai kingdoms of Sukhothai and the more northern Lan Na developed their own emblematically Thai Buddha images in the 13th century. The classic features each adopted were subsequently comingled in various ways, particularly in workshops located between the two capitals, giving rise to a broadly classified Northern Sukhothai style. This well-preserved sculpture pertains to a sub-category of Northern Sukhothai Buddha images classified by Stratton as the 'Thai Yuan' type, of which there is a closely related important example in the National Museum, Bangkok (see literature comparison below). Sukhothai features abound in the present sculpture, from the 'single lotus' posture, the elegant abstracted fingers, the robe leaving the right shoulder bare, and the sash draped over the left shoulder reaching all the way to his navel.
