A BRONZE TORSO OF BUDDHA, SUKHOTHAI KINGDOM, 13TH-14TH CENTURY This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve The Jorgen Ruben Gallery Ledger, entry from 2005: “No. 151, FH 1992, HH 2001, Thai Sukhothai / Ayutthaya bronze torso of Buddha 15th c.” Gallery price: EUR 16,500 or approx. EUR 27,500 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. Thailand. Elegantly cast with broad shoulders and a slender waist, wearing a diaphanous uttarasanga which covers the left shoulder and crosses the chest diagonally, but leaves the right shoulder and right arm bare, culminating in a fishtail hem over the navel. Having wrested power from the Khmers, the Sukhothai rulers endeavored to cease production of Buddha images in the Khmer style and develop a new, uniquely Thai aesthetic. With the assistance of Singhalese Theravadan monks, they adhered to textual prescriptions in ancient Pali treatises (shastras).
