A Vietnamese silk embroidered ‘The Hùng Kings' Temple Festival’ panel Embroidered in multicoloured satin stitch with a scene depicting vertical procession traveling along a narrow pathway across a watery landscape, leading to a temple at the summit of a mountain, 71.3 x 129cm. This embroidered panel depicts a ceremonial procession associated with the Hùng Kings’ Temple Festival (Giỗ Tổ Hùng Vương), specifically the “royal palanquin procession” (lễ rước kiệu vua), one of the traditional celebratory rituals held during the festival. At the front of the procession, attendants carry ceremonial flags, followed by attendants bearing percussion instruments. At the centre, participants carry a palanquin containing offerings, while attendants at the rear follow with additional tribute items as the procession proceeds towards the mountain temple for sacrificial rites dedicated to the Hùng Kings. The Hùng Kings are regarded as the ancestral founders of the Vietnamese nation. The earliest written references to the Hùng Kings appear in fifteenth-century Vietnamese historical and literary texts, including the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư (“Complete Annals of Đại Việt”) and the Lĩnh Nam chích quái (“Selection of Strange Tales from Lĩnh Nam”). Belief in the worship of the Hùng Kings (Tín ngưỡng thờ cúng Hùng Vương) remains deeply rooted in Vietnamese cultural identity and folk tradition. Through a series of state-led institutional developments, the Vietnamese government formally established the public commemoration of the Hùng Kings as a nationally recognised ritual observance supported within the legal framework of the state.
