A GEORGE III MAHOGANY KETTLE STAND ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, CIRCA 1770 With a circular dished top with scalloped edge and slide above a foliate-carved baluster stem on confronting C-scrolled carved legs headed by foliate scrolls and ending in scrolling toes 61cm high, the top 31cm diameter Purchased from Hotspur Ltd., London, 24th June 1968 (£975) Private Collection, Christie’s New York, Important English Furniture (9240), The Berg Collection, 21st Oct 1999, lot 27 ($31,050 incl. BP). With its fluted cabriole legs with 'Gothick' ogee panels, boldly scrolled feet and foliate-carved plain baluster shaft, this tripod table is closely related to a drawing for a Tea 'kitchen' kettle stand by Gillows, dated May 1769. Executed by William Ball and Richard Gibson, who were journeymen working for Richard Gillow, and supplied to Thomas Willis, Esq., the drawing also featured a slide beneath the top.
