A RARE DUNBALL STEAM POTTERY TERRACOTTA ARCHITECTURAL TILE SOMERSET, CIRCA 1880-1885 Of keystone form with mask to front, hollow back, stamped Dunball Steam Pottery, brick and tile works, Bridgwater 40cm high, 20cm wide Brick and tile making in the Puriton area of Somerset had started in 1841 and the Dunball Steam Pottery seems to have been in existence between 1880 and 1886 when it was acquired by the firm of Colthurst Symons. The output of the firm was significant with up to 20,000 tiles produced each week. It would seem that the utilitarian products of roofing and eave tiles was the firm’s main focus; examples of more decorative elements, such as this loosely derived from Coade and other designs, was minimal.
