LORD RONALD GOWER (1845-1916), A RARE PLASTER MAQUETTE OF WILLIAM GLADSTONE LATE 19TH CENTURY The figure of William Gladstone depicted seated, axe by his side, signed to cast in panel to his right 75cm high, the base 33 x 34cm Literature "Morning Calls- Lord Ronald Gower", published in The English Illustrated Magazine, May 1895 In the 1895 article the author detailed the every day life and work of the artist Donald Gower, whilst omitting the more ‘scandalous’ lifestyle’ Oscar Wilde and others knew him for. On page 124 he details this particular statuette, examples of which seem not have appeared at auction: “Peculiar value will always be attached to the sculptor’s statuettes of Mr Gladstone and Lord Beaconsfield, for he was privileged to know both great statesmen with close intimacy…. Mr Galdstone, in his shirt-sleeves, is seated on the stump of an old oak tree, his right hand grasping an axe. The attitude was suggested by a photograph taken from life at Hawarden” Condition Report Disclaimer
