A LATE CHARLES I OR EARLY CHARLES II RAISED WORK OR STUMP WORK BOUND BOOK OF PSALMS CIRCA 1647-1660 Raised work or stump work type embroidery with figures to front and back, in coloured and metal threads, probably depicting Jacob by sacrificial fire, large holly stalks and birds above, female figure possibly a Saint, in red banded dress, holding flower aloft, flanked by tulip and blue flower in large vases, butterfly above, the book 'The whole booke of Davids Psalmes: both in prose and meeter: With apt notes to sing them withall, London printed by R.C for the company of Stationers, London, 1643, ink inscription R W Ethelston' 11cm high, 8cm wide, 2cm deep A comparable example of exactly the same book printed by Hopkins and Sternhold in 1643 and with floral and wildlife binding is held in the V&A collections (Library number L.2261-1938).
