A FINE GEORGE III CARVED MAHOGANY AND INLAID SERPENTINE SERVING TABLE CIRCA 1780 90.5cm high, 182.5cm wide, 73.5cm deep Purchased from Gregory & Company, 27 Bruton Street, Berkeley Square, London by Geoffrey Blackwell on 10th October 1935 for £200. The original bill of sale and further correspondence between the two parties is available with this lot. Symonds, 'Furniture in the Collection of Mr Geoffrey Blackwell', Apollo Vol XXIII. no. 136, 23rd April 1936 Geoffrey Blackwell OBE (1884-1943) was the director of the food company Crosse and Blackwell, which dates back to 1706 and was one of the first to receive a Royal Warrant from the newly-crowned Queen Victoria in 1837. He collected Georgian furniture as well as modern British art and was closely advised by renowned furniture historian R. W. Symonds on his furniture acquisitions. Symonds, who wrote an entire article in Apollo on Blackwell's furniture collection, advised some of the most important furniture collectors in the early twentieth century, including Percival Griffiths, James Thursby Pelham and E.B. Moller; many of the pieces in their collections are referenced or illustrated in 'The Dictionary of English Furniture', Percy Macquoid and Ralph Edwards, 1924. Furniture belonging to Blackwell that has appeared at auction in recent years have achieved strong prices. A tripod table that once belonged to Percival Griffiths and then Geoffrey Blackwell, was sold by a descendant of Blackwell, Christie's London, 14th June 2001, lot 35 (£135,750); in the same sale, a George II walnut and parcel gilt mirror was sold by the late John Blackwell, lot 30 (£80,750). Another tripod table, but with a plain moulded top was also sold by a descendant of Blackwell, Christie's London, 24th November 2005, lot 10 (£102,000). Condition Report Disclaimer
