Certified by Dr. Qing Chang, Ph.D. Description: Scene depicts a man being tortured, Water-color and ink on silk, sight size is 13" x 13" = 32.5 cm x 32.5 cm. Signed upper right. Exceptional detail in the features of the figures. Encased in wooden frame that measures 17" x 16.50" = 42.5 cm x 41.25 cm; Opinion of the expert from China: The painting is about a story in the 14th century Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. From 169 AD to 280 AD, Chinese is divided into 3 kingdoms, namely WEI, SHU and WU. It shows a famous general in the state of Shu, Zhang Fei (Yi De) who punished a corrupted official named Du You, by whipping him. Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Ca. 19th century. Ink and color on paper. This is an album painting depicting Zhang Fei (nickname Yide) whipping the city government inspector who was tied to a pillar. Next to the pillar was a willow tree. Zhang Fei's sworn brothers Liu Bei and Guan Yu stood in front of a hall. Liu Bei, who was wearing a red robe, was waving his right hand to stop Zhang Fei, while Guan Yu, who was wearing a green robe, was drawing his sword and seemed to want to help Zhang Fei kill the inspector. The ink inscription on the upper right corner of the painting says: "Zhang Yide whipped the inspector with angry...Ze Sun paints it". According to the style of the painting, it seems to have been painted in the Qing Dynasty in the 19th century. The story in the painting comes from the famous historical novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, written by Luo Guanzhong (ca. 1330-ca. 1400) in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei are the main characters in the novel and also real historical figures. In the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), Liu Bei served as the county captain of Anxi County (in present-day Dingzhou City, Hebei Province). One day, the city governor sent an inspector to inspect Anxi County. However, the inspector was greedy for bribes, and Liu Bei did not intend to bribe him, so the inspector held a grudge and wanted to frame Liu Bei. After being discovered by Zhang Fei, Zhang Fei, who had a fiery nature, whipped the inspector severely, which relieved Liu Bei's anger. After that, Liu Bei resigned and left Anxi County. Liu Bei later established the Shu Han Kingdom in Sichuan and was the first emperor of the Kingdom. Then the history entered the Three Kingdoms era (220-265). Although the story shown in this picture is from the late Eastern Han Dynasty, the characters' clothing has the style of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The painter Ze Sun mentioned in the inscription is not recorded in the history books and is not very well known. He seems to have lived in the late Qing Dynasty.
