Paleolithic carved petrified wood statue Venus Mother Goddess, 12,000 BC-150,000 BC, certified. An archaic carved petrified wood female figurine, rendered with topless form and prominently detailed breasts. The mother Venus carries a long necklace with a long amulet between her breasts. The main features of the face are still visible: two eyes, nose, mouth, chin, ears (left ear is more prominent). The parietal part of the skull is higher than frontal, possibly because of the hair style. The upper body stands on cylindrical base and could be used as a praying to Goddess at the cave altar or could be easily carried along, during migration travel. The piece embodies the artistic expression and cultural significance of its time, highlighting the emphasis on feminine beauty and fertility. The intricate carving and smooth finish showcase the skill and craftsmanship of ancient artisans. Height: 2.5 inches = 6.35 cm; = 63.5 mm; Base: 17 mm x 19 mm; Base Area: A=πr2=π·1.82≈ 2.544 cm2. Moh’s hardness: 6.5 (petrified wood 6.5-7.5); Research at 50x magnification revealed concentric annual growing rings at the base (characteristic for growing trees) and vertical cracks, which happened with drying wood (photos are attached). The density, hardness and weight is significant and characteristic to petrified wood. Condition: the surface of the petrified wood has secondary signs of weathering. Weathering describes the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on the surface of Earth. Water, ice, acids, salts, plants, animals, and changes in temperature are all agents of weathering. The majority of petrified wood on Earth is believed to be anywhere from 65 to 570 million years old. It is possible to find pieces that aren’t as old, as some petrified wood also formed in the Cenozoic Era, which began 65 million years ago and continues to Paleolithic period. Condition: the surface of the petrified wood has secondary signs of weathering. Provenance: We obtained this Paleolithic artwork from a private collection of an archaeologist in New York.
