D N TAEODO-SIVS(sic) [..]P F AVG, diademed, helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust to right, holding spear and shield / GLORIA RO-[..],Theodosius, wearing military attire, standing to left on galley, head to right, raising hand; Victory at helm holding rudder; wreath in left field; CO[..] in exergue. For prototype cf. RIC IX 52c.3. The issue is, on account of the mintmark, occasionally described as having been struck at Constantinople for use at Cherson. However, the crude fabric and unconventional style as well as major inconsistencies in the epigraphy point to local production at the important port city of Cherson. 4.02gr, 21mm, 3h. Near Very Fine.
