Ghazal, (Iranian b. 1966-), Untitled Pen on map paper 69.5 x 100cm Exhibited: Carbon 12, Al Quoz, Dubai, as part of the Geo-Politics of Roots - No Man's Land, 14 Nov - 8 Jan 2012 Iranian artist Ghazel's work is defined by her nomadic existence. She left Iran at 19 years old to study art in France. She says of her map series, "I have often used maps in my art and performance videos because they are an easily understood metaphor for boundaries, roots and being uprooted", maps serve as the background for her personal confession. Ghazel takes cartography as an attractive medium through which she transmits her poetic messages. They focus on the reality of a world that does not correspond to the perfectionist high-tech geographic informational system.
