Jogen Chowdhury, (Indian b.1939-) Christmas card with sketches; ink on card 17 x 22 cm Provenance: The Private Collection of Niladri and Ranu Chaki Note: Jogen Chowdhury is considered an important painter of 21st century India. He was born in Daharpara Village, a village in the Faridpur district of Bangladesh in 1939 and moved wit his family to Calcutta after partition in 1948. He graduated from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata in 1960 and subsequently the Ecole nationale superieure des Beax-Arts, Paris in 1967 and then spent time in London. He was appointed as a textile designer in the Handloom Board in Chennai. In 1970, he joined the Calcutta Painters Group. His first collection of poems Hridoy Train Beje Othey was also published in the same year. In 1972 he was appointed curator of the Art Gallery of Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. He founded the Gallery 26 and Artist's Forum in New Delhi in 1975. He currently works in Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan as professor of painting.
