Having formed the Progressive Arts Group in 1947, he left to seek other forms of training and met his wife and artistic collaborator French artist Janine Mongillat whom he was to marry in 1959 following a decade long relationship. A 2023 exhibition in Dubai explored their respective artistic output as a result of their long and loving relationship while letters from Raza to Janine published in the Centre Pompidou's 2023 centenary exhibition on Raza reveal the artist's emotional depths and knowledge of French writers such as Charles Baudelaire and Andre Gide.
