The goddess Parvati as Kamakshi Amman, Chamba, North India, circa 1875, Opaque pigments on paper heightened with gold on paper, in a cremation ground, sat in a yogic posture on two corpse, one Shiva's, laid on a flaming pyre under a mango tree, holding her attributes, the bow, ankus, arrow and noose, surrounded by diminutive representations of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva Panchanana, Shiva, and attendants, dogs, crows and vultures, all flesh or bone eating, ruled in black, margins and borders lacking, the reverse with a small sketch of two dogs, mounted, 26 x 20cm. Provenance: Property from the private collection of John Acton (1932-2017) acquired in India in the 1960s
